“Necessity is the mother of invention,” said the Greek philosopher Plato. Beyond necessity, personal life experiences too can become the key to new inventions. Similarly, when the parents of a government school girl were engaged in pineapple harvesting, one of them was bitten by a snake. Motivated by this incident, she invented a modern harvesting tool for her parents and has earned widespread praise.
The Modern Harvesting Tool and Government School Student Sathya
Sathya, an eighth-grade student at the Government High School in Nathukuzhipatti, Kolli Hills, Namakkal, is the daughter of agricultural labourers. During pineapple harvesting, snake bites have long been an unavoidable problem, and Sathya’s own parents have suffered from them. Wanting to help her parents, and with the guidance of her science teacher, Sathya has developed a modern harvesting tool.
Government School Girls Bag First Prize of ₹1 Lakh!
The tool was showcased at the innovation exhibition held at Anna University, Chennai, where the government school girls won the first prize of ₹1 lakh on behalf of their school.
Students Must Think Scientifically!
On this, Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said, “Our government school girls from Kolli Hills, Namakkal, have won the first prize of ₹1 lakh at the innovation exhibition for their invention. My heartfelt congratulations to them!”

"My Mother Was Affected by a Snake Bite…"
Sathya said, “In the Kolli Hills region of Namakkal, pineapples are widely cultivated. During harvesting, people often fall victim to snake bites and stings from venomous insects. My mother too was affected by a snake bite while harvesting pineapples. I invented this tool so that no one else, like my mother, would have to suffer in the future.”
Electric Fan, LED Light — A Hi-Tech Invention!
She further said, “Since most farmers return home late at night after harvesting, we have fitted an LED light directly onto the harvesting tool. To reduce the impact of the heat, we have also attached an electric fan to it. With the help of my fellow students and under the guidance of my science teacher, R. Chandrasekaran, I designed this tool. We have made it simple so that everyone can use it easily for harvesting.”
