On the morning of Vinayaka Chaturthi, everyone in the house was busy preparing sweets for the festival. My uncle suggested that I take the bicycle out for some exercise, so I did. As I rode down the street, a middle-aged man emerged from a shop and asked if I could accompany him to buy a lamp for a wedding, as my father had requested.

I had no idea who he was, but I agreed, knowing it was my father’s wish. He pedaled the bicycle while I sat at the back, enjoying the ride. Along the way, another uncle came across us and casually reminded us to fill air in the tyre, making sure we were all set for the journey.

He rode the bicycle for about six kilometers before stopping in front of a salon. He asked me to wait there while he attended to an urgent errand. I waited at the salon for hours, but he never returned. Unable to locate him, I walked back home.

When I reached home, my mother was visibly worried. The first question she asked was, “Where is the bicycle?” I explained that my father’s friend had taken it.On hearing this, she shouted, “You’ve been cheated!” and scolded me, even hitting me in her anger and worry.

I struggled a lot to get that bicycle, and I lay in the hall feeling sad, thinking that my father would be very angry. But he simply smiled and said, “What’s the matter, son… never mind, it’s okay…” and walked away. My father always has that natural, effortless smile.

Wherever I go in Tamil Nadu, party workers tell me, “Your father would put his hand on your shoulder and talk to you, inviting you to have tea with full warmth and authority.” That same quality has been passed down to me. “Being able to smile naturally with a calm face is the legacy my father gave me,” he says.
