Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi is the Minister for School Education in Tamil Nadu. He is a prominent young leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He hails from a village named Anbil near Lalgudi, Trichy. He was born on December 2, 1977, to Anbil Poyyamozhi and Malathi. He completed his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and a Master's in MCA at Bishop Heber College, affiliated with Bharathidasan University, Trichy. He worked as a software engineer for two years before entering politics following his father's demise. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at National College, Trichy. Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi is married to Janani, and they have two sons named Eniyan and Kavin.

Unstoppable Achievements

He began his political career in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a party with which his family has a long-standing association. In 2014, he was appointed Deputy Secretary of the DMK Youth Wing. In the 2016 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, he contested from the Thiruverumbur constituency and won with 46.98% of the votes. He was re-elected in the 2021 assembly elections with a larger margin, securing 53.48% of the votes. On May 7, 2021, he assumed the role of Minister of School Education for Tamil Nadu.

Political Works

Anbil Mahesh, who has been actively involved in politics for over two decades, is currently serving as the District Secretary of Trichy South DMK, which encompasses the legislative assembly constituencies of Tiruchirappalli East, Thiruverambur, and Manapparai. In addition, he has been appointed as the Thanjavur District In-charge Minister and is also serving as the In-charge Minister of Nagapattinam District.

Golden Period of School Education Department

In the field of school education, more than 50 new welfare schemes have been successfully implemented by the Government of Tamil Nadu, including the Numeracy and Literacy Mission, Illam Thedi Kalvi (Education at Doorstep) Scheme, Breakfast Scheme, Pudumaipen Scheme, Tamil Pudhalvan Scheme, and Naan Mudhalvan Scheme. With a strong focus on the welfare of students, he has been actively involved in formulating and implementing these initiatives with great dedication.

On February 22, 2025, at the Tamil Nadu State Parent-Teacher Association Conference held in Virudhachalam, Cuddalore district , the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru M.K. Stalin, lauded Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, stating that “the period during which he serves as the Minister for School Education in Tamil Nadu will be remembered as the golden era of the School Education Department.”

Following the legacy of Anbil Dharmalingam

Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi’s grandfather, Anbil Dharmalingam, was one of the founding leaders of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He was well-acquainted with stalwarts such as Periyar, Anna, Rajaji, Kamarajar, and Quaid-e-Millath, and was a close friend of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and distinguished scholar Kalaignar Karunanidhi.

Anbil Dharmalingam began his political journey as a Panchayat President and went on to serve in Kalaignar Karunanidhi’s Cabinet, holding several key portfolios including Agriculture, Local Administration, Revenue, and Information & Public Relations.

The father of School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Anbil Poyyamozhi, was a close friend of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. He was elected as a DMK candidate in the Legislative Assembly elections held in 1989 and 1996, and served effectively as a Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Anbil Poyyamozhi passed away on August 28, 1999.

Friendship Spanning Three Generations

The friendship with the Kalaignar family has spanned two generations and now continues into the third. The Honorable Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru Udhayanidhi Stalin, and the Minister for School Education, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, have been inseparable friends since childhood. Today, with one serving as the Deputy Chief Minister and the other as the School Education Minister, their bond marks a new chapter in the contemporary political landscape of Tamil Nadu.
