Water Bell Wins Parents' Hearts

Drrinnggg… That familiar bell sound fills students with boundless excitement. Whether it’s the start of school, the end of a class, break time, the lunch interval, or dismissal—every ring of the bell brings a burst of joy. There’s hardly a student who doesn’t light up at its sound! And now, joining that lineup is the Water Bell!

Encouraging Timely Hydration — The Water Bell Initiative!

Recently introduced by the Tamil Nadu School Education Department, the Water Bell initiative has sparked fresh enthusiasm among students. 

Designed with students’ health and well-being in mind, this initiative ensures they stay hydrated at the right times. Spearheaded by Tamil Nadu’s Minister for School Education, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, the programme aims to build healthy habits by ringing a bell that reminds children to drink water throughout the school day. 

Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi Earns Praises!

Originally implemented in schools across Kerala and warmly welcomed by both students and parents, the Water Bell initiative has now been introduced in Tamil Nadu as well—earning widespread appreciation for Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi. 

Since June 28, 2025, this initiative has been in effect across Tamil Nadu government schools. The Water Bell, also known as the Hydration Bell, rings three times a day—at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.—encouraging students to drink water at regular intervals throughout the school day. 

No More Dehydration !

Speaking about the initiative, government school head teachers shared, “Unlike the usual bell, the Water Bell rings in spaced intervals with a distinct tone. During these times, students are given 2 to 3 minutes to drink water. Following the detailed guidelines issued by the School Education Department, the Water Bell initiative is being implemented effectively. As a result, students remain energetic throughout the day, and the risk of dehydration—especially due to heat exposure—has been completely avoided,” they said with satisfaction.

‘Water Bell’ Rings in Private Schools Too!

Following the overwhelming success of the Water Bell initiative in government schools, parents began urging for its implementation in private schools as well. Responding to this demand, the initiative has now been extended to all private schools. The Water Bell now rings in these institutions too, thanks to a directive issued by the Director of School Education.
