Tamil Nadu’s government schools are undergoing a transformative revival. As a result, the academic year 2025–26 has seen an unprecedented surge in enrolments, with over 400,000 new students joining government schools. This reflects the success of several welfare schemes implemented by the government with the well-being of students, teachers, and parents in mind, and it reaffirms the public’s growing trust in government education.

Government Schools Are Now a Symbol of Pride!
On July 30, 2025, Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi announced on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle: "4 lakh new admissions in government schools! We welcome our student treasures with a thousand kisses. A government school is not a symbol of poverty – it is a symbol of pride!" The statement received widespread appreciation, highlighting the rising status of government schools and affirming their transformation into centres of quality education.
Staggering Admission Numbers
As of July 30, 2025, a total of 4,00,364 students have been newly enrolled in Tamil Nadu government schools.

Breakdown by Class:
- KG Classes : 32,807 students
- Grade 1 (Tamil medium) : 2,11,563 students
- Grade 1 (English medium) : 63,896 students
- Grades 2 to 8 : 92,098 students
- Total : 4,00,364 students
Which Districts Lead in Admissions?
Southern districts lead in new enrolments.

- Tenkasi 8,571 students (Highest in the state!)
- Dindigul : 8,000 students
- Tiruchirapalli : 7,711 students
- Kallakurichi : 7,554 students
Nilgiris recorded the lowest enrolment with 1,022 students. These figures clearly demonstrate the trust parents in rural areas are placing in government schools.
How Was This Achieved?
Thanks to consistent efforts by teachers and education officers following the guidelines from the Department of Elementary Education, coupled with intensive awareness campaigns by the Tamil Nadu government, this remarkable shift has become possible.
Key Interventions:
- Anganwadi Integration: Awareness campaigns encouraged children completing pre-primary education in Anganwadi centres to enrol in nearby government schools.
- Illam Thedi Kalvi (Education at Your Doorstep): Volunteer-led home-based learning activities helped bridge gaps and build interest in schooling.
- Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme: Nutritious morning meals fulfilled the dietary needs of children from underprivileged backgrounds, making schools more accessible and attractive.
- Smart Classrooms: Across the state, 22,931 high-tech classrooms have been set up in government primary schools, offering students a modern digital learning experience.
- Awareness Campaigns: Public campaigns raised awareness among parents about the various welfare schemes and educational benefits offered by government schools.
As a result of these integrated efforts, the public perception of government schools has shifted dramatically.
More parents are now eager to enrol their children in these schools, trusting in their ability to provide safe environments, quality education, and holistic development.

While the National Education Policy 2020 attempts to centralise control and limit state autonomy over education, Tamil Nadu has responded with bold reforms. The success of these efforts is turning government schools into proud institutions shaping the next generation. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin had earlier declared that Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi's tenure marks the "Golden Era of School Education" in Tamil Nadu. The record-breaking 4 lakh student enrolments further strengthen that statement, spreading confidence among parents and reaffirming the success of Tamil Nadu’s progressive education model.
