Thalapathy's Soldier Anbil Poyyamozhi

Anbil Poyyamozhi, the son of Anbil Dharmalingam and father of current School Education Minister of Tamil nadu, holds a distinct place in the history of the DMK. Like wax melting to serve its purpose, he dedicated himself entirely to the growth of the party and the progress of 'Thalapathi' M.K. Stalin.

The Eldest Grandson of Anbil

Anbil Dharmalingam, a towering figure in Tamil Nadu’s political history, served as the Chozha Mandalam commander of the DMK, a major social justice movement. When the DMK first came to power in Tamil Nadu in 1967, Anbil Dharmalingam served as the Minister of Agriculture. He had two sons, Poyyamozhi and Periyasamy, with Anbil Poyyamozhi being the elder.

Thalapathi Stalin’s College Friend

Anbil Dharmalingam was a close ally of the late former Chief Minister Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, both in party affairs and governance. In the same way, Anbil Poyyamozhi has been a steadfast companion to Thalapathi M.K. Stalin, dedicating himself to the growth of the DMK as a true soldier. In 1973, when the current Chief Minister M.K. Stalin studied history at the State College of the University of Madras, Anbil Poyyamozhi was also studying at the same college.

The Beginning of the DMK Youth Wing

The DMK Youth Wing was founded in 1980 at Jhansi Rani Park in Madurai. In 1982, during the second annual conference held in Tiruchirappalli, a 7-member organizing committee was formed. This committee included both M.K. Stalin and Anbil Poyyamozhi. The committee toured across Tamil Nadu, establishing youth wing units at the district, union, city, and village levels. M.K. Stalin was appointed as the State Secretary of the Youth Wing, while Anbil Poyyamozhi served as the State Deputy Secretary. Because of his outstanding leadership as Youth Wing Secretary, M.K. Stalin came to be known as “Thalapathi” (Commander) . Under his leadership, the Youth Wing first operated from Anbagam as its headquarters, and it continues to function from there to this day.

Anbil Poyyamozhi’s Long Journey with the DMK Youth Wing

Anbil Poyyamozhi played a crucial role in expanding the DMK Youth Wing across every corner of Tamil Nadu. Thalapathi M.K. Stalin toured the entire state, establishing Youth Wing units in every village, and Anbil Poyyamozhi was by his side throughout these journeys. He accompanied Stalin everywhere, advising him on where to go, whom to meet, and how to further strengthen the Youth Wing, becoming a strong pillar of support in the movement’s growth.

Anbil Poyyamozhi – A Man Who Melted Like Wax for the Party’s Growth

Though he was the son of a minister, Anbil Poyyamozhi never desired positions such as district secretary or minister. He had no thirst for power. Instead, under the leadership of Thalapathi M.K. Stalin, the son of Kalaignar, he devoted himself to strengthening the Youth Wing. He worked tirelessly for the growth of the DMK.

Even during times when the DMK faced setbacks in elections, the Youth Wing worked with unwavering determination. In that effort, Anbil Poyyamozhi’s role was vital. He poured himself entirely into the movement, burning like wax to see Thalapathi M.K. Stalin rise to greater heights within the party.

Two-Time MLA

He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Tiruchirappalli-2 constituency in 1989 and again in 1996. He also served as the Chairman of the Tiruchirappalli District Central Cooperative Bank. On August 28, 1998, he passed away. Mourning the death of his close friend, Thiru M.K. Stalin said, “I have not only lost a friend or a brother—I have lost my very life.” This heartfelt tribute reflected the deep bond they shared and the indelible mark Anbil Poyyamozhi left in Tamil Nadu’s political history.

The Third Generation Rises

Following the legacy of Anbil Dharmalingamand Anbil Poyyamozhi, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has emerged as an unshakable force of the DMK in the Tiruchirappalli region. Currently serving as Tamil Nadu’s Minister for School Education, Anbil Maheshcontinues to honor the legacy of his grandfather and father through his committed service. Today, he stands as a pillar of the DMK, so strong that even political adversaries tremble before him.
